A former principal of Hamilton Township Elementary School has been named acting principal of Riverside School.

The Princeton Public Schools Board named Nancy Whalen as interim principal for the 2022-23 school year at a July 26 board meeting.

Whalen, who will be paid $600 a day, was selected by a search committee made up of parents, staff and administrators from Riverside School, Superintendent of Schools Carol Kelley said.

Whalen served as principal of Sayen Elementary School in Hamilton Township from 2005 to 2019. She served as a guidance counselor for nine years in the Hamilton Township School District before becoming principal of Sayen Elementary School.

Whalen will replace the principal while school district officials seek a permanent principal. She fills the position created by the reassignment of former Riverside School principal Ebony Lattimer, who was named vice-principal of Princeton Middle School.

Lattimer was the last in a series of principals at Riverside School before transferring to Princeton Middle School. The position of primary school principal was held by the late Bill Cirullo for 30 years before his death in 2016.

There have been two interim directors and three directors – including Lattimer – since 2016. Lattimer was appointed director in August 2021.

Kelley acknowledged the turnover in the principal’s office at Riverside School when she announced the decision to transfer Lattimer to Princeton Middle School.

School district officials plan to take the time to assess Riverside School’s needs, Kelley said. The goal is to find a principal who will provide stability and leadership to all of Riverside School’s students, staff and parent community, she said.
