FRAMINGHAM — A primary school principal from Brockton was nominated on Thursday to become the next principal at Hemenway Primary School.

Marybeth O’Brien, currently principal of Gilmore Elementary School in Brockton, will take up her new post in Framingham on July 1. district community while navigating the selection process.

“It’s obvious that Hemenway is an inclusive environment, showing great pride,” O’Brien said. “I look forward to continuing my educational journey at Framingham Public Schools to learn and grow alongside students, families and other teachers and educators.”

O’Brien also served as principal and vice-principal at Huntington and Raymond Elementary Schools in Brockton. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Political Philosophy from Northeastern University; a master’s degree from Simmons University in urban education; and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration from American International College.

Currently, she is enrolled in Boston College’s doctoral program for educational leadership.

Elizabeth Simon, current principal of Hemenway, will retire at the end of the school year, after 46 years in teaching. Most of her career has been spent at Framingham State Schools, the last six as Headmistress of Hemenway.

The other two finalists for the job were Phanenca Babio, principal of Putnam Avenue Upper School in Cambridge, and Saundra Watson, deputy principal of Angier Elementary School in Newton.

The interview process for the position began with a staff and community survey. A screening committee, made up of staff members and parents, met several times to refine the interview questions and meet the candidates.

The three finalists then participated in a virtual “Meet the Candidates Forum,” where attendees posed questions and provided feedback in a survey to Superintendent of Schools Robert Tremblay.
