Alamo Drafthouse Cinema reopens its Lubbock location for the first time since October on Thursday, bringing back much of its range of food, refreshments and movies as well as new COVID-19 security protocols.

“The industry has taken a hard hit over the past year, but people are excited to be coming back to the movies,” said Robert Saucedo, programming director for Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.

Saucedo said he hopes the allure of watching high-profile movies on the big screen, along with a meal and snack menu, will draw the Lubbockites out of their living room.

Alamo Drafthouse prides itself on excellent presentations and distraction-free viewing where people can get the chance to really get lost while watching a movie, Saucedo said.

Saucedo added that he was personally easily distracted by his cell phone as he tried to watch a movie at home over the past year.

“Movies are a (form) of escape – you can get lost in the movie, have a little bit of escape and fantasy for a few hours,” Saucedo said. “And I think that’s why it’s important to support the theatrical experience and to support films that are amazing to see on the big screen.”

The Alamo Drafthouse cinema has also undergone major renovations to provide a new experience for the community.

Everything from replacing the hallway carpet to installing new vintage movie posters – as part of a general refresh of the theater’s overall aesthetic – has been done, Saucedo said.

“We’re giving the theater a bit of spice,” he said.

Speaking of the safety precautions they will take, Saucedo said deep cleanings will be done between each showing and at the end of each night.

Saucedo added that the safety of their guests and their team is of the utmost importance. And they learned lessons on how to keep theaters clean and make sure they provide a great experience.

They are bringing back the programming that everyone loved from the Alamo, including movie nights and their classic movie screenings, Saucedo said.

They have a limited menu at the moment, which includes the pizzas, burgers and milkshakes that people love, and they look forward to continuing to expand the offer over the next few months, he said.

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is located at 120 West Loop 289.
