PMC Creates Dolby Atmos Cinema Demonstration Installation for Business Customers

United Kingdom – United Kingdom Loudspeaker manufacturer PMC has opened a new state-of-the-art home cinema within its Holme Court headquarters. Created to showcase the company’s dedicated installation speakers, the 22 square meter cinema will be used to demonstrate custom installation, retail and global distribution to customers.

Conceived by Ian Sutton, Director of PMC Distribution UK, the vision was to create a space in which PMC could invite customers around the world to experience the best that can be achieved in a home cinema environment.

PMC is well known for its close involvement with the motion picture industry, designing the speakers used by major studios to create movie soundtracks. The Emmy Award-winning company has been Hollywood’s sonic benchmark since 1991 and today is the gold standard for Dolby Atmos mixing suites worldwide. The new Holme Court facility is the perfect place to demonstrate cinematic sound for home installations, with the same stunning dynamics and impressive realism found in major studios.

To achieve this, the company enlisted the services of Guy Singleton, owner of the renowned and multi-award winning installation company, Imagine This.

Singleton’s role was to take charge of a space in the Georgian mansion that has been PMC’s headquarters since 2014, and overcome the obstacles a building of this age presents to produce an acoustically and aesthetically perfect cinema space.

“We faced a number of challenges during this design and build project,” says Singleton. “We had to overcome issues with things like traditional sash windows that vibrated with low frequencies and a large void under the boards that acted as a bass resonator. These were coupled with the global supply chain issues raised by the pandemic, which meant that obtaining certain materials proved very tricky.

“But he did it with amazing results,” adds Ian Sutton. “We have a cinema space worthy of the stunning new PMC Ci series loudspeakers, which we can now show in the type of environment for which they were designed.”

The build features three of the flagship ci140 speakers plus two ci140 subs for front LCR channel functions, mounted behind the acoustically transparent screen, in a very sturdy, inert baffle wall that is built to THX standards.

Surround functions, in the 9.1.6 cinema, are shared between six of the ci65 models for the walls, with six ci30 ceiling mounted for the height channels. And, although this is referred to as a .1 LFE setup, there are actually three working subwoofers (in addition to the two ci140 subs). Two of the company’s active SUB 2 PMCs are mounted in the front wall below the screen, with a passive XB3 mounted below the rear stage area.

Power processing and amplification comes from PMC Distribution UK’s long-time electronics partner, Bryston, with the company’s 16-channel SP4 Immersive Cinema Processor at the heart of the system. Amplification is provided by a set of Bryston amps, including the 9B cubed multichannel.

Many other companies were involved in supplying products for the PMC cinema and credit should be given to Barco for the Balder 4K Laser projector, Acoustic GRG Products for the acoustic treatment and fabric walls, Kordz for all the cabling, Crestron for the system controls and Acoustic Innovations for luxury cinema seating.

The PMC cinema is now complete and will soon welcome its first trade visitors from the UK bespoke installation and retail sectors, as well as overseas PMC distributors. It is also envisaged that end users wishing to embark on the construction of their own high-end cinema will be invited to visit their installers.
